The complete series of Sight Word Wall includes 36 images photographed at one elementary school in the lower ninth ward of New Orleans. The school was devastated by the levee breach at the Industrial Canal during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It has been declared 100% damaged and is scheduled for demolition.
On these walls we find elements. Though coated in dust, mold and neglect, still seen is colour, kindness, respect, order, optimism, the alphabet, the rules, the encouragement, the world, and the promise to do our very best work. 12 images are highlighted in this slideshow. |

“...a small collection of 9 photographs taken in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans on April 15, 2008. This area was submerged in water by the levee break at the Industrial Canal during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Today, the Lower Ninth Ward appears deserted, like an overgrown ghost town, with scattered signs of rebuilding.”

In November of 2007, I had the pleasure of traveling to Death Valley Junction to see a performance by Marta Becket at the Amargosa Opera House. Marta Becket is a dancer, an artist, and an inspiration. Originally from New York City, she came to Death Valley Junction in 1967 and has since renovated the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel, painting its many murals by hand and continuing to perform her own shows on stage.
This is a short photo essay from my time in Death Valley Junction and the evening that I spent at the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel. The essay concludes with a photo of the stage setting before the performance and a photo I snapped of Ms. Becket as she sat on the stage after her show to sign autographs for the numerous attendees. It does not detail Ms. Becket’s performance, nor her murals. I think you should see them for yourself.
The documentary, “Amargosa: Story of Marta Becket” first piqued my interest in Amargosa and is highly recommended. For more Information go to: http://www.amargosafilms.com And of course, please visit the Amargosa Opera House website: http://www.amargosa-opera-house.com/ |
